Can someone please translate the following Wikipedia definition of Eddie Van Halen’s brown sound into layman’s terms?

“Van Halen achieved his distinctive tone by using a stock 100-watt Marshall amp, a Variac to lower the voltage of the amp to get high gain distortion at lower volumes, and a “Frankenstrat” guitar Van Halen constructed using a vintage Gibson humbucker pickup rewound by Seymour Duncan.”

  1. DiRTY D Says:

It’s the sound he makes when crapping.

  2. gary s Says:

basicaly he used bits and pieces of old guitars and tweaked his amp and pedals until he found a sound that he saw as unique
