ARTIST asked:

I already own a danelectro 59 dc, but am looking to upgrade to something more sophisticated.

I want to invest in a vintage Gibson SG, and am looking on the internet and in various music stores and pawn shops in the area where i live.

Does anyone know of any site that specializes in these types of guitars? I probably won’t buy online, but I still want to see all of my options. Here’s a picture of a 1964 model:

George T asked:

just a question about which of these two guitars to get

1. Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar
or
2. Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric Guitar

here’s a link that compares both http://www.musiciansfriend.com/compare?base_pid=517030&base_pid=517536

so i know that the studio is probably better because it’s more expensive (though i could be wrong), but is it a better buy for the money?

a friend’s brother said i should i should get the mahogany because it’s a better value, and i trust him, but i just wantd a few more opinions to see what other people would choose

kairvette asked:

I am planning on buying whole-sale Gibson strings for my new LP std 07 cause they are quite bit cheaper. But I don’t know which one I should get. The choices being 1. Humbucker 2. brite wires 3.vintage. I am not quite sure which one comes with my LP. But I did notice the original strings are actually different on LP standards at GC. So what are the essential difference between them?? Which is the best? Thanks!
I am only interested in Gibson strings. By LP Std, I mean a gibson Les paul standard.

Schecter Tempest Custom issues?

Mooplet asked:

I currently own a Schecter Tempest Custom.
It’s about a year old and I’ve loved it ever since.
But it has a tendency to come out of tune quite easily.
When I play shows with my band, I pretty much have to tune after every song.
It’s mainly the G string, which I know is common, but usually not this bad.
After one song, it may be a half or an entire step down from what it should be.
And the other strings don’t stay tuned very well either.

And here’s the question.
I was wondering whether I should get some mechanical locking heads or just get a new guitar.
I don’t really know much about the locking heads or how to set them up, or if it would even be of much help to me.

I was thinking about getting a Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric Guitar.
I mainly play death/metal, kinda like Carnifex, Devil Wears Prada, or Bring Me The Horizon.
I’ve never used a Gibson but I’ve always wanted to try them cause I love the sound, but at the same time I don’t know if it would be right for me.

So what should I do?
Thanks.

why do so many people think Gibson and Fender are the best guitar brands?

Love Lies Bleeding asked:

i think they are ok guitars, but they arent the best on my opinion by a long shot. here’s why.

Gibson – they are way overpriced. They are good guitars, but they arent worth 2500 bucks. I would think about buying a les paul if it was like 600, but its not even worth that much. they are also 5 piuunds or so more than any other guitar i have used. and, on top of all that, everyone i know wants one like its their life dream!

Fender – I am not as critical about these guys. they are cheaper priced, but their quality has gone down in the passing years. now a good majority of rtheir guitars are made in mexico and to my stanards many of them barely pass as a starter guitar. i do like the telecaster series-the ones with the humbucker pickups, not singles. i do not like that everyone thinks this is the best brand out there.

now i have to admit the vintage guitars from eachof these brands are probably amazing. i have not tried a vintage but i hear a lot of good stuff about them.

anyway what would I reccomend? i have never had a bad experience with an ibenez guitars (aside from the starter guitar, or the gio series (same thing)) they are made solid and as long as you dont throw it against a wall or anything the paint job wont chip. i reccomend this guitar, and i can honestly say that is the best guitar i have ever played.

http://ibanez.com/eg/guitar.aspx?m=S2170…
the only problem with that guitar is the middle pickup gets in the way, but thats the way i play.

this link works, not the other one.

Electric Guitar Queries?

Akshay asked:

I want to buy a new electric guitar. I’m looking out for a Fender Strato-caster and i have some queries.

Firstly, some info: I’ve been playing for about a year and a half and i can’t exactly say that I’m an expert, but I’m not a complete dullard either loll! I plan to take up the guitar as a career and go to Berkley. I play Rock.

Now the queries:

1. What pickup setup should I go in for: 2 Single coil and a humpbucker or all single coils or what?

2. What’s the HSS in the name of a Stratoocaster mean?

3. Is it possible to but a normal strat and then later on get it fitted with a floyd rose locking tremolo system?

4. Whats the difference between a normal and a vintage guitar? Which one is more advisable?

5. Where can I buy a Strat in Bombay, India? How much will one cost approximately?

6. What exactly is a Hot Rod?

7. Do you think that there si another guitar that would be better and most cost effective that the strat?

Is a vintage 60s Les Paul worth $200?

Posted by on 13th June 2008 in Rock and Pop

Jonny Q asked:

I was at a flea market and this guy had some old stuff, had a creme colored strat and a and a vintage 60s era Lea Paul, looked pretty good and he had the original case, he wanted $200 for it. I still have to play it before I consider buying it. I know that vintage guitars (especially strats and Les Pauls) can be pretty valueable. I already have a one year old Squire strat (made by Fender) and I’m happy with it, but I’d like a Les Paul and vintage just makes it cooler (to me). Anyways, assuming it plays well and is in good condition, is it worth the $200? I don’t know the exact model as I’m not an expert on any brand or model, but in general what is a Les Paul from the 60s (playable and in good condition) worth now?
