Can someone please translate the following Wikipedia definition of Eddie Van Halen’s brown sound into layman’s terms?

“Van Halen achieved his distinctive tone by using a stock 100-watt Marshall amp, a Variac to lower the voltage of the amp to get high gain distortion at lower volumes, and a “Frankenstrat” guitar Van Halen constructed using a vintage Gibson humbucker pickup rewound by Seymour Duncan.”
